As your constituent, I am writing today to urge you to support the Military Readiness Enhancement Act (HR 1283). Our policy that prohibits openly gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans from serving in the military risks the strength of our national security and needs to be repealed and replaced.
The Military Readiness Enhancement Act would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and in turn strengthen all branches of the military by allowing all qualified Americans to serve their nation. The United States military holds this policy when armed forces such as the Isreali Defense Force, NATO and South Africa allow for equality. We are currently on par with military forces such as China, Cuba and North Korea in our continued discrimination.
I support a strong U.S. military and I know that prohibiting qualified men and women from serving their country does nothing to achieve that goal. Sexual orientation has no bearing on a person's ability to serve in the military, and our current "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy forces some of our soldiers to lie. Discrimination should not be tolerated in our military ranks.
Recent numbers show that 75% of the American public believe we should repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Now we have an opportunity to replace it with a policy that makes sense. We need your help to do this, however.
I ask that you repeal the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and instead support the Military Readiness Enhancement Act (HR 1283).
I appreciate your time and look forward to your support on this matter.
